At the end of May, experts and practitioners from the fields of public relations, communications and media attended the ICCO Southeast European Summit in Ljubljana, Slovenia to discuss the theme ‘New Media in PR and Communication’. The event marked the sixth annual occasion of the International Conference on Communication Practice, which this year benefited from direct involvement with ICCO. Speakers hailing from nine different countries came together to share their experiences and knowledge of how to operate in a digital world. It is clear that new forms of communicating via digital media are not solely on the horizon but already here – just a click away on sites like Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, YouTube, TripAdvisor, Wikipedia and many more. But what does that mean for public relations? Is the communications market transforming itself into one giant conversation? Participants discussed how the use of new media is making communication more open, more transparent, and much faster. It involves the exchange of ideas, questions and emotions, bringing with it the need to listen as well as lead. As a result, organisations are discovering the need to partner with their stakeholders in relationships built on credibility and trust, and the role of public relations in that equation is growing. The skills of public relations consultants and the opportunities afforded by this new environment of digital conversation and identity have the potential to create a winning combination. The event was organized by the Slovene Chamber of Public Relations (ZOJS) in conjunction with ICCO and in partnership with the London School of Public Relations (LSPR).
